Overview
Currently, the peer-to-peer transactions are the most common use cases in Venmo. You went out and ate pizza with your friends, you paid the bill and the others will "Venmo you" their portion of the bill. When they are making this transaction, a note must be added, and it'll get shared in their feed depending on their privacy settings.
Faster transactions
We wanted to mimic this but thought that if we simply don't make notes mandatory, the transaction will be faster since there won't be any friction to think of words to say and users will be more encouraged to share this payment in their feed.
First, we though of enabling businesses to create a custom note that will be the placeholder for when users make payments.
This approach brought up some concerns around buyers not entering their own words and it loses personal touch. We knew we wanted to make it faster but at the same time didn't want to loose personality.
We explored having templates for users to choose from as well as adding custom messages.
Privacy matters
What if I am sharing notes when paying my friends back for activities we do together but want to keep private the flowers I am buying for my partner?
In Venmo, everybody is free to choose what and to whom they want to share certain information. When it comes to payments, we also wanted to allow them to have absolute control over the words they share in the notes and where they money went.
Transaction from Business QRC
Sellers can set a custom amount to charge their clients.
When buyers are at store, they simply scan the code to begin the payment process. We'll still be asking for the note at the very end once transaction is complete to avoid friction.
We got rid of the templates while still adding a placeholder that buyers could customize. We are also keeping emojis and stickers to make it a fun experience.
Business can be private or buyers don't want to share their activity with anyone. They've decided what to share and we were very careful about it.
